Apple Pay in Singapore

Launched on 19 April 2016, Singaporeans finally got our hands(or Apple Watches) on the long awaited contactless technology from Apple.
It it worth the wait?

The User Experience

Well… I’ve always carried with me an AMEX card all these while. Adding a new card on my iPhone 6s is quick. Didn’t encounter any error or anything that’s unfamiliar.

Apart from the list of ready merchants Apple indicated on their website(E.g. Fair Price, UNIQLO), I’m able to successfully make a transaction at Popular bookstore. See below.

Using Apple Pay

Though adding a card was a breeze. It seems like Apple should probably guide us all a little bit. My experience on using UOB Mighty taught me that we will always need to trigger something before making a payment. It seems that we all have the impression that it’s just tap and pay, like our Visa PayWave. No, it isn’t. We need to trigger something. Don’t hold up the queue when you’re at Fair Price, figuring what’s wrong.

For Apple Watch users, you’ll need to double-tap the rounded rectangular button to activate Apple Pay.

For Apple iPhone users, it’s still quite a hassle. It might be easier to just present your credit card payment.

If you need help, you may refer to AMEX for detailed instructions.

Conclusion

It does make life slightly easier. However, it’s only available for AMEX card holders at this point of writing. Let’s see what’s gonna change when Visa and Master steps in.
