Password Update Checklist for Singaporeans

Chances are, someone has already got your password. Believe it or not. As long as you’ve connected to a public WIFI before, especially free ones, you’ve been vulnerable.

5 min read, but actions might take you >1 hour

In Singapore, we can easily find public WIFI such as Wireless@SG or major shopping malls. When we travel, we connect to airport WIFI, in cafes, hotels or restaurants.

The intention of this article is to let us have a quick reference on what needs to be updated on a regular basis. It’s just doing our personal due diligence, and it does not guarantee we’re always safe from attackers.

Backup

Before we perform any actions, the most important thing is to have the latest backup copy of your data(e.g. photos or documents). This will mean that you can do a restoration when you’re having trouble.
1. Backup to the cloud or on a hard disk
2. Update System Software on phones (Read steps for Apple or Android)
3. Update Passwords (Read more below)

Checklist

There is NO SHORTCUT. It might take us hours to accomplish. However, we can start with updating the most accessible items. Like… our phone apps.

IMPORTANT

1. Before you start going through the list, make sure you’ve got some methods of storing your new passwords. It should be a file that is NOT SYNC online. However, I strongly recommend using password managers to store passwords.
2. Have a think through what password you want to use? It should be a minimum of 8 characters, having a combination of Upper and lower case, digits and symbols.

Here we go…

1. Phone unlock pin/pattern
2. Apple ID or Google Account that’s used to download apps
3. Turn on 2FA(2 Factor Authentication) on supported apps. See list of 2FA supported apps
4. SingPass
5. Bank Accounts
6. Home WIFI SSID & password
7. Gmail
8. Dropbox
9. Facebook
10. Instagram
