What’s the lifespan of a website?

Are there such things? Yes, it does.

When a website is no longer relevant, people naturally leave the site. Keeping contents on website as engaging as possible keeps your website in tip top condition. I’ve prepared a list of signs as a guide.

Viewership drop

When it no longer interest users or Google search bots, people exits the site. Quality contents are critical. Search engines such as Google crawls for quality and relevant contents. Having good structure in the information displayed helps search bots and people navigate freely in the site.

However, there’re also other reasons for viewership drop. If your website is still displaying Flash only contents, nobody can read it. Statistics shows >50% of viewership is from mobile devices. Apple iPhones and Google Android by default won’t show Flash contents.

Mobile formats

Visitors naturally leave websites displaying illegible contents. The trending geeky term for this is ‘Responsive Layout’, ‘Responsive Format’ or ‘Responsive Web Design’. Basically, it’ll respond to whichever devices used to load the website. It’s not a file format extension, but rather the way it’s designed and developed.

Responsive layout is used to carry a consistent look across devices. There’re grids and laws predefined to maintain a layout without worrying much on the type of device others could be using. Nowadays, there’re just simply too many types of smart phone, tablets or devices. A couple of years back, we were still designing websites with additional mobile layout to cater for mobile phone users. Don’t get me wrong, mobile layouts are still relevant, just that it’s a little more costly to setup. There’re huge enterprises using mobile layouts till today.

Dated

Certain design style gets outdated over the years, which is a natural phenomenon. Just like fashion, it get dated. However, there’re some designs that might have some timeless look. The bottom line is, people change. Our likes changes all the time. If the current design doesn’t work for your targeted group of customers. It will be time.

Business Goals

All businesses evolve over the years. If the current structure doesn’t seem to hold the content well, then it’s time to rethink. For example, there may be new services or products added to your company, but it takes users a hard time trying to get to it.

Trend changes

Disruptive technologies over the last 1-2 years made significant impact to how we commute and communicate these days. To name a few, companies like Grab, FastFast, Zyllem, Red Mart, Deliveroo are slowing shaping the future of Singapore’s landscape. Consumers like us are slowly depending on deliveries for simple reasons–cheap and convenient. How should your business respond to smarter and younger consumers these?
